Mathura, in Uttar Pradesh on the banks of the sacred River Yamuna, is one of the seven holiest cities of India. It is the birthplace of Lord Krishna, who was born over 5,000 years ago. Just 12 km away is Vrindavan, the village where Krishna spent his childhood playing with his friends, eating butter, and playing his magical flute. Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi
MathuraThe exact place where Lord Krishna was born in a prison cell of King Kansa. It is the most sacred spot in Mathura and the heart of the city.
Dwarkadhish Temple
MathuraBuilt in 1814, this beautiful temple is famous for its colourful paintings, carved pillars, and grand celebrations of Janmashtami and Holi.
Banke Bihari Temple
VrindavanOne of the most loved temples of Vrindavan. The curtain in front of the deity opens and closes again and again, because it is believed no one can bear Bihari Ji's charming gaze for long!
Prem Mandir
VrindavanA stunning white marble temple that glows in changing colours at night. Its gardens have beautiful statues showing stories from Krishna's life.
ISKCON Temple
VrindavanAlso called Sri Krishna Balaram Mandir, it attracts devotees from all over the world. Foreigners sing and dance here chanting "Hare Krishna"!
Govardhan Hill
Near MathuraThe holy hill that Lord Krishna lifted on his little finger to protect villagers from heavy rain. Devotees walk 21 km around it — this is called Parikrama.
Vishram Ghat
MathuraThe main ghat on the River Yamuna where Lord Krishna rested after defeating Kansa. The evening aarti with floating diyas looks magical.
Nidhivan
VrindavanA mysterious forest of twisted trees. People believe Lord Krishna performs Raas Leela here every night, so no one is allowed inside after evening!

Holi — The World-Famous Festival of Colours
The Holi of Braj is famous all over the world and lasts for more than a week! In Barsana, women playfully hit men with sticks — this unique Holi is called Lathmar Holi. There is also Phoolon wali Holi (played with flowers) and Widows' Holi in Vrindavan. Tourists from many countries come just to see it.
Janmashtami — Krishna's Birthday
The biggest festival of Mathura! At midnight, temples ring bells and blow conch shells to celebrate Krishna's birth. The whole city is decorated with lights, and jhankis (beautiful scenes of Krishna's life) are displayed everywhere.
Govardhan Puja & Annakut
Celebrated a day after Diwali, people make a small hill of food (Annakut means "mountain of food") to remember how Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill to protect the people of Braj.
Radhashtami — Radha Rani's Birthday
Celebrated grandly in Barsana, the birthplace of Radha Rani. In Braj, people greet each other by saying "Radhe Radhe!" instead of hello.

Mathura ke Pede
The most famous sweet of Mathura! Made from khoya (thickened milk) and sugar, these brown pedas are loved all over India. No trip to Mathura is complete without them.
Makhan Mishri
Butter with sugar crystals — Lord Krishna's favourite! He was lovingly called Makhan Chor (butter thief) because he stole butter from the homes of Gopis.
Lassi & Kachori
Thick, creamy lassi served in clay cups (kulhads) and hot kachoris with spicy aloo sabzi are the favourite breakfast of Mathura.
Raas Leela & Braj Bhasha
Raas Leela is a beautiful dance-drama showing stories of Krishna's life. People here speak sweet Braj Bhasha, the language in which poet Surdas wrote his famous poems.
